The Inland Empire of Southern California is the unofficial name of the area adjacent to, and inland from, the Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Previously referred to as the Orange Empire for the area’s historical orange groves and thriving citrus industry, the term Inland Empire was coined in the 1950′s in order to identify this area approximately 60 miles from north to south and some 50 miles wide spanning both Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Since the Inland Empire is not the formal name of the area, there are no proper boundaries, although the San Gabriel Mountains are often used as a starting point in the North, Pomona on the west and San Diego County to the South. The Inland Empire Metropolitan Area is served by three major airports: Ontario, Palm Springs, and the new San Bernardino International.
